Blue Devil Marching Band Starts Year on High Note

TrophyThe Huntington High School Blue Devil marching band started its competitive season off on a high note.  At its first field competition at Sachem High School last weekend Huntington scored 2.2 points higher than any of the other bands in all divisions.

With a score of 73.55, the Blue Devils walked away with first place in their division, as well as the whole competition.  The final result was anything but ordinary as it is very unusual for there to be such a big spread of scores between the top band and the other groups.

FormationThe judges wrote many positive comments in their critique of Huntington’s program, exclaiming that they loved the whole show.  They remarked that the music and drill has high energy and the students are playing with a big, full sound.

“We are very proud of our band students and instructors,” said Joan R. Fretz, director of fine and performing arts for the Huntington School District.  “They have put together a terrific show for the competitive season and will now work on fine tuning the precision of the drill and music, in response to a list of suggestions made by the judges.  Having a strong, appealing show, both in music selection and drill design is critically important in the competitive field circuit.”

HornsBand directors Jason Giachetti and Brian Stellato have been working with the full band staff for more than eight months, planning the concept for this year's show.  “We are thrilled that the show has been received so positively, so early in the season,” Ms. Fretz said.

The band's next competition will be held at Brentwood High School this Sunday, September 23.  The Blue Devils will perform at 1:45 p.m.  The competitive season culminates in the New York State Field Band Championships in Syracuse on October 27-28.
